Ontbijtje bij Vivian in de B&B in Rotorua die ons lekker aan de klets houdt omdat ze nogal geïnteresseerd is in onze reis naar Antarctica. Maar we moeten op weg omdat we om 13:40 een afspraak hebben bij de grotten om de gloeiwormen te gaan bekijken.
Bakkie gedaan in beautiful Benneydale.. Mwah.. Maar de koffie was een heerlijke onderbreking van onze rit. Weer onderweg zien we na de zoveelste spoorovergang en na ruim 4 weken rondrijden in het land de allereerste trein voorbij komen dus die moest even op de foto zal je begrijpen..
We zijn ruim op tijd bij de Waitomo caves dus lunchen nog even voordat we inchecken. Daarna gaan we de gloeiworm grot in. Flink klauteren en daarna gaan we over in een bootje waar we echt heel veel gloeiwormen zien. In deze grot mocht helaas niet gefotografeerd worden dus hebben we alleen foto’s van het verlaten van de grot en het prachtige regenwoud aldaar.
We verkassen naar de “Ruakuri” grot op 5km afstand waar we wel mogen fotograferen. Deze grot is gedeeltelijk rolstoel toegankelijk dus we gaan de eerste 20 meter naar beneden middels een grote spiraal. De gids vertelt enthousiast onderweg in de grot en het is een mooi schouwspel van stalactieten en stalagmieten. Als verrassing komen we onderweg ook nog gloeiwormen tegen die we dus wel even op de foto konden zetten. Op de foto zie je de gloeiwormen (lichtgevende stipjes) aan het plafond hangen met hun lokdraad naar beneden bengelend. Met die draad vangen ze de insecten die op hun lichtjes afkomen.
Na de grotten rijden we een klein stukje terug naar het dorp Waitomo alwaar we een kamer voor de nacht hebben. Het is een geinig kamertje, eenvoudig maar compleet. Omdat we nog iets moeten dineren rijden we naar het restaurant in het dorp dat open is (er is helaas veel dicht met goede vrijdag) maar deze is volledig volgeboekt. Dus even naar een dorpje verderop waar we lekker Indiaas hebben gegeten.
Prachtig die grotten ..good memories..en handig dat er ook een toegankelijke was.. ben er ooit abgeseild maar dit is veel beter…fijn dat je hier wel mocht fotograferen 🇳🇿👍😉
